PERTH GLORY 0-0 MAN UTD

Manchester United XI: Romero, Dalot, Tuanzebe, Jones, Young, Andreas Pereira, Matic, Chong, Lingard, James, Martial.

Subs: De Gea, J. Pereira, Rojo, Shaw, Smalling, Wan-Bissaka, Garner, Gomes, Mata, McTominay, Pogba, Greenwood, Rashford.

  • Swansea signing Daniel James makes his Manchester United debut
  • Striker Romelu Lukaku absent from the squad with ‘niggling injury’
  • Ashley Young is made captain and starts at left-back
  • Aaron Wan-Bissaka starts on the bench but will get 45 minutes

PERTH GLORY 0-0 MAN UTD

24: Slight concern as Daniel James goes down and stays down after a 50/50 over on the left touchline. Pitch probably isn’t helping either – they played Aussie Rules on it last night. I think calling it garbage might be a little harsh…

21: Bosh! Welcome to the big leagues, Daniel. Ex-Leeds midfielder Kilkenny thwacks into Daniel James around 28-yards from goal. The winger bounces to his feet.

Ashley Young prepares to deliver… close! The captain bends a delightful effort into the side-netting.

18: Anthony Martial opens those legs and marauds forward unopposed. Picks out James nicely but his low cross is intercepted by the Perth goalkeeper. Whose name it… his name is… *looks at team sheet*… Liam Reddy.

15: We’ve just ticked past the 15-minute mark and I’m convinced Daniel James is easily United’s best player. Sensible passing when required, not trying to take everyone on as so many new signings do, rapid and finding lots of space. Yeah – £15m seems a good deal at this ridiculously early stage to judge a player.

13: “Sergio Romero, always such a calm and reliable figure for Manchester United,” says the MUTV commentator as the goalkeeper punts the ball straight out of play.

10: Dangerous combination going on here. And those combinations are Perth Glory’s suicidal tendency to over-play from the back and United’s tenacious pressing.

Chong, James and Lingard are all flying forward to press from the front. Good pace and energy from the trio.

8: This is the Young and James show! James wins the free-kick, Young plays a clever reverse pass to the winger, who wins a corner. It all breaks down as Andreas Pereira slips when delivering the set-piece.

5: I suspect this will be a rather one-sided affair with Perth not looking glorious. Geddit? I’ll see myself out.

3: Decent opening from the visitors with Ashley Young pinging a through ball for Daniel James. The youngster cuts inside but sees a low cross blocked.

James then loops another cross through the penalty area with Diogo Dalot arriving to blast it high into the stands.

1: That was a ridiculously premature ‘officially underway’ update from me there. Apologies. It looked like we were ready to go before being treated to an unexpected traditional Aboriginal dance. Now we’re underway.

PERTH GLORY 0-0 MAN UTD

1: OK, Manchester United’s pre-season campaign is officially underway. I’m quite looking forward to seeing new recruit Daniel James unleashed. And Phil Jones’ progress – naturally.

Young guns

11:58: Perth Glory clearly taking this one seriously. It’s the school holidays so they have three 15-year-old teenagers on the bench.

Five-minute warning

11:55: Nearly underway. The MUTV host is currently taking great pleasure in the fact that Manchester United fans are outnumbering Perth Glory supporters.

Lights show

11:50: It’s all very exciting over at the Optus Stadium. It’s obviously dark being 7pm in Perth and we’re being treated to a light show. What a time to be alive.

Twitter round-up

Coady: Seems as if we’ve signed James to be a left-sided winger… not like we have enough of those.

Konrad: MUTV on. Let’s watch some football. Can’t wait to see the new lads in the Manchester United shirt!

Liv: Hoping for a great game from Phil Jones. Might get us an offer…

Bradley: If Tuanzebe impresses and we sign Maguire we NEED to get rid of Jones and Rojo.. they’re stinking out the place, Matic and Young are the other 2.. worst 4 players we have.

What the manager says

11:45: Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaking to MUTV: “Second half will be 11 new ones, so we will make all subs at half-time.

“Everyone gets 45 minutes, good workout, apart from the ones who have got a few niggles. They’re all okay but just small niggles that we want to protect. We will probably see them on Wednesday I reckon.

“I’ve been impressed with them. I’ve been impressed with the whole squad, the attitude, the focus. Of course you expect them to come back with great energy but it’s been very good.”

Countryfile…

11:35: The coverage has taken a bizarre twist.

We’ve gone from Denis Irwin being asked anything and everything to fill precious seconds to the diet of an eagle and how it is trained to fly around the stadium.

Oh, they also slung Irwin and Bryan Robson onto a segway to drive around the city. Can’t quite tell if it’s the best thing I’ve ever seen or terrible.

Mystery solved

11:30: Solved, explained, covered up… whatever you’d like to call it – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has discussed Romelu Lukaku’s absence.

The Manchester United boss said the Belgian has a small niggle and has been left out for precautionary reasons. Should be OK for Wednesday’s clash against Leeds.

We’ll also be covering the Leeds game here at Express HQ. Gosh, I’m really nailing this shameless self-promotion stuff, eh?

Transfer News…

11:20: I’ll just provide you with the headlines as reeling off all of the players Manchester United have been linked with could take a decade or two.

  • Ed Woodward wants to sign a centre-back before completing a deal for Bruno Fernandes
  • Manchester United have slapped an astronomical £180million price-tag on midfielder Paul Pogba
  • Newcastle are asking for £50m for Sean Longstaff – that will reportedly cease United’s interest

MUTV…

11:15: Always interesting to watch the club’s official TV channel.

There’s been absolutely no mention of any problems surrounding the club. No mention of Romelu Lukaku’s absence or Paul Pogba starting on the bench.

BUT Denis Irwin IS wearing a snazzy hoodie. So… y’know… that’s a nice thing.

Romba…

11:10: Have I combined Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba to create the nickname Romba? Yep. Don’t forget this is pre-season for us bloggers too.

The two have stolen the headlines in recent weeks (months, years) with Lukaku linked with Inter Milan and Pogba publicly revealing his desire to more elsewhere.

Can’t be good for the dressing room.

And interestingly neither has made the starting XI today. Obviously Pogba is on the bench and will probably make an appearance at some point – but Lukaku’s absence is telling.

Should Ed Woodward and Co. simply get rid of the pair? Let me know through all the usual channels.

Trolled.

11:00: This might be the very definition of trolling in the modern age.

Manchester United were given a reminder of Liverpool’s recent Champions League victory as a plane carrying a banner flew above them ahead of an open training session at the WACA Ground in Perth on Thursday.

Liverpool added a sixth European crown to their collection when they beat Tottenham in the final last month and some were not willing to let fierce rivals United forget in a hurry.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were preparing to begin a public training session when the banner, which read “Liverpool FC – 6x European champions” was seen overhead.

Team News – Manchester United

10:50: So what system has Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deployed…

Well, I believe it’s a 4-2-3-1 with Anthony Martial leading the line – flanked by Daniel James on the left and Tahith Chong on the right and Jesse Lingard in behind.

Diogo Dalot starts ahead of new recruit Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back with captain, leader, legend Ashley Young at left-back.

Axel Tuanzebe forms a partnership with Phil Jones in the middle of defence. Interesting.

Yah: Cant believe Ashely Young is still captaining our side in 2019. Anthony Martial is going to get no service. Andreas and Matic Looooool.

Jon: Young shouldn’t be even at the club! Him and Jones in particular are literally stealing a living. Everyone knows it except Solskjaer.

Freddy: Well… at least the new line-up graphic has improved.

That’s the spirit Freddy! It was all sounding a bit negative for a while there…

Starting XI…

10:40: Well… where’s Romelu Lukaku?!

The Belgian international has been heavily backed to join Antonio Conte at Inter Milan and doesn’t feature in the match day squad despite being fit.

Manchester United XI: Romero, Dalot, Tuanzebe, Jones, Young, Andreas Pereira, Matic, Chong, Lingard, James, Martial.

Subs: De Gea, J. Pereira, Rojo, Shaw, Smalling, Wan-Bissaka, Garner, Gomes, Mata, McTominay, Pogba, Greenwood, Rashford.

Morning…

10:30: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Perth Glory vs Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side may have travelled down-under – but the microscope is still firmly on the Red Devils.

Paul Pogba supposedly arguing with Jesse Lingard, Romelu Lukaku yawning while in the gym and Daniel James flying (not literally) during an open training session.

Puts Neighbours and Home & Away to shame, right?

Anyway, we’re here to see how Manchester United are shaping up for the 2019/2020 campaign. Ready for the team news?

Transfer news headlines

Ed Woodward is planning to make a signing before completing a deal for Bruno Fernandes

Portuguese outlet A Bola claim that Manchester United want to solve their defensive issues by signing a centre-back before they finalise a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Manchester United have slapped an astronomical price-tag on midfielder Paul Pogba.

The Mirror claim Ed Woodward and Co. are playing hardball after Mino Raiola’s recent comments and have valued Pogba at £180million.

Sean Longstaff is prepared to accept that Newcastle will price him out of a transfer to Old Trafford this summer.

United believed they could wrangle Longstaff away from St James’ Park for £25m but Newcastle want closer to £50m.
