The 21-year-old has been identified as a top midfield target by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after impressing under Rafael Benitez during a breakthrough campaign.

While Manchester United have made no attempt to mask their interest, they are still yet to make a formal approach for Longstaff.

They had been expected to try and close a deal before they jetted off to Australia for their pre-season tour.

However the United squad are already in Perth preparing for their first fixture of the summer this weekend and chiefs are yet to make the breakthrough.

Longstaff has already started pre-season training with Newcastle, despite reportedly being frustrated at the departure of Benitez, who gave him his first-team chance.

Sky Sports are reporting that United chiefs have recently held talks about the young English star, as they look to sign two midfielders.

“We’ve been told there have been high level discussions last weekend about Manchester United signing Sean Longstaff from Newcastle,” anchor Tom White said on Good Morning Transfers.

“Newcastle will not confirm whether these talks did take place.

“We understand they are categorically not interested in selling Longstaff and they see him as part of their future plans.

“We are told that Manchester United have not yet made an official bid.”

Newcastle have already lost strikers Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez, and it now looks likely that Steve Bruce will be their newly appointed boss.

He will have plenty of work to do on Tyneside and one of the toughest tasks at hand will be trying to keep hold of Longstaff.

“This one has been going on since day one of Good Morning Transfers,” he said.

“Remember with Ayoze Perez, they couldn’t say he’s not for sale because he had a release clause.

“Longstaff doesn’t and they won’t let him go, he’s homegrown.”
