Neil Lennon is currently caretaker boss at the Scottish Champions, but despite not losing any of his 11 games since returning, fans have been underwhelmed by performances.
Chris Sutton thinks that Mourinho’s wages would prove a huge stumbling bloke in proceedings and doesn’t expect the deal to go any further.
“Mourinho reportedly pocketed in excess of £10million a year at Manchester United so it was no real surprise to see the club play down the reports linking them with a move for the megabucks Portuguese,” Sutton told the Daily Record.
Although Sutton is sure that the job at Celtic is an attractive one, he admits that the Brendan Rodgers was a ‘coup’ for Scottish football.
He continued: “There’s no doubt Celtic is an attractive, highly pressurised job and to get Brendan Rodgers, like Martin O’Neill before him, was a real coup for Celtic and all of Scottish football.”
The debate around Lennon’s future has rumbled on despite the Northern Irishman leading them to the title last weekend.
Sutton also reckons that Steven Gerrard will have regrets about his first season as Rangers boss, and praised Lennon for guiding Celtic to the title.
He added: “Rangers will be thinking what might have been because they’ll be regretting the fact they didn’t put a bit more pressure on Celtic.
“The Light Blues made a concerted effort this season in terms of spending and getting a high-profile name as boss which was fantastic for the Scottish game.
“And when they won the Old Firm derby at Ibrox before the winter break the sides were level on points, albeit Celtic had a game in hand.
“You have to say Celtic’s fixtures coming out of the winter break were pretty gentle but they hit the ground running and Neil took over during a difficult run of games.
“In the end it was all about getting the job done and securing the title.
While he might have liked to do it in more style that, for me, isn’t all down to Neil.
“He inherited this group of players and we know the bottom line in Glasgow is that it’s all about winning and coming first.
“He has done that and is on the brink of a treble Treble which is an amazing achievement.”
