The Blues will be confident of progressing to the Europa League final after securing a 1-1 draw against Frankfurt at the Commerzbank-Arena.
Luka Jovic header the home side into the lead after 25 minutes, directing Filip Kostic’s cross beyond the diving Kepa Arrizabalaga.
However, Ruben Loftus-Cheek set up Pedro to fire in a vital away goal for Chelsea just seconds before the half-time whistle.
Things could have been even better for the Blues when David Luiz hit the bar with a free-kick after the break, but the tie remains in the balance ahead of the second leg.
Express Sport have rated how the Chelsea players performed against Eintracht Frankfurt, but do you agree?
Chelsea player ratings vs Eintracht Frankfurt – Europa League
GK: Kepa Arrizabalaga – 5
Looked a bit flat-footed trying to get across to Jovic’s header, and little to do apart from claim a couple of balls into the box.
RB: Cesar Azpilicueta – 6
Under a lot of pressure in the opening stages but stood his ground well and dug in when necessary.
Unable to effect the game as much as he would have like in attack with a few poor crosses.
CB: Andreas Christensen – 5
Went in the book early for a poor challenge on Sebastien Rode and was caught out for Jovic’s header when he lost track of the Serbian.
CB: David Luiz – 6
Arguably equally at fault for the goal, with Luiz unable to get close to Jovic as he glanced in Kostic’s cross.
Passing was good though, and the Brazilian was a threat in the air as well as rattling the bar with a free-kick.
LB: Emerson Palmieri – 4
Poor delivery wasted a number of good positions, and he wasn’t as assured as usual defensively.
CM: Jorginho – 6
A game of two halves for the midfielder, who was swamped and harried constantly in the opening 45 minutes.
Looked a different player after the break and helped Chelsea boss the game.
CM: N’Golo Kante – 8
A wonderful display full of energy and athleticism, tearing up and down the pitch helping out both in attack and defence.
Dropped his team in it late on but had enough left in the tank to recover the situation and was a cut above most of those around him.
CM: Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 8
Was guilty of being overawed in the first few minutes as he found the home side well up for a physical battle.
However, the young midfielder hit back with an excellent display where he dictated the tempo and created chances for his team-mate – including Pedro’s equaliser.
RAM: Pedro – 7
Showed great composure to take a touch before firing home his goal and has really stepped up in recent weeks as Chelsea prepare for life without Eden Hazard.
LAM: Willian – 4
Frustrating again, with moments of real skill drowned out by so many poor decisions and sloppy mistakes.
ST: Olivier Giroud – 5
Took a battering from the Frankfurt defence in the opening half but was a focal point for the Blues attack and was manful in his hold-up play.
SUB: Eden Hazard (on for Willian, 61 mins) – 6
Easy to see his quality up against a tiring defence, although defending in numbers nullified the Belgian’s impact.
SUB: Mateo Kovacic (on for Loftus-Cheek, 83 mins) – N/A
Didn’t look in any danger of making a winning contribution.
